How to Get Your Central Air Conditioning Ready for Summer

As the weather warms up, ensure your air conditioner (AC) is in good working condition. While you could arrange professional maintenance, there are several things you can do before calling the experts. Once you have turned off the power to the AC, follow these steps to prepare your central air conditioning for summer and avoid getting caught off guard:

1. Clean or Replace the Air Filters

Dirty and clogged air filters can restrict airflow, making the AC work harder to cool your home. You can usually find the air filter in the air handler cabinet or furnace in your basement, utility closet or garage. Once located, replace your air filter in five easy steps and reduce your energy bill this summer.

2. Clean the Condensor Coils

Locate your condenser unit, which will often be outside against the side of your home. It will look like a big metal box with sides that look like grilles. You should be able to see fan blades if you look through the grilles. To clean the coils, unscrew and remove the side and top panels. Use a soft brush vacuum attachment to gently clean the coils from the outside and inside of the unit.

3. Clear Debris from the Condensor

If you didn’t cover the condenser this winter, it might have a build-up of debris inside the unit. After cleaning the condenser coils, scoop out any leaves or debris from the base and use a soft cloth to clean the fan blades gently. Cut back any foliage surrounding the unit to prevent obstruction to the airflow.

4. Check the Coolant Lines

Take note of the refrigerant tubes or pipes that run into the condenser unit. These will usually be covered with foam coolant line insulation. Replace any insulation that is missing or frayed.
